Do iPhone cleaner apps actually work?

Short answer: some of what they promise is real, and some of it is impossible on iOS. Knowing the line between the two is the whole trick. We make a cleaner app, so read this with that in mind. We have tried to be fair.

What is impossible on iOS

Apple keeps every app in its own sandbox. That means no app can:

• See how much space other apps use
• Clear another app's cache (Safari, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok…)
• Shrink "System Data"
• Turn on iCloud's "Optimize iPhone Storage" for you
• "Boost RAM" or "speed up" your phone in any measurable way

Any app that shows a button for one of these is either opening a Settings page for you, or showing an animation. Both are fine if the app says so. The problem is when the app says "Cleaned 3.2 GB of junk" and nothing changed.

What is real

Apps can read your photo library, contacts and calendar, with your permission, and they can do things Apple's own apps do not:

• Find similar photos, not just exact duplicates, with a strictness you choose
• Sort screenshots and videos by size, so you see the biggest first
• Find blurry photos
• Find photos you have not opened in a year
• Merge duplicate contacts with a proper preview
• Find duplicate calendar events
• Group promotional email by sender and unsubscribe in bulk

For a photo-heavy phone, these usually free several gigabytes for real. That is the honest, useful part of the category.

How to spot a bad one in 30 seconds

1. The number appears before the scan finishes. If the app says "You can free 12.4 GB!" two seconds after opening, it is an estimate designed to get you to the paywall.
2. The price is per week. $7.99 a week is over $400 a year. Look for monthly or yearly pricing.
3. You are stopped after a few deletes. "Delete 5 more items – Upgrade" mid-task is the most common one-star complaint in this category.
4. The paywall comes before any result. You should see what the app found before you are asked to pay.
5. It has a "Boost" or "Speed" button. That feature cannot exist on iOS.

What a good one looks like

It scans first and shows numbers only when it has counted them. Where iOS blocks something, it says so and sends you to Settings with the steps. Every delete goes through a review screen and the system confirmation. It charges a normal yearly price and does not cut you off mid-task.
