How to find duplicate photos on iPhone without an app

Since iOS 16, the Photos app has its own duplicate finder. Most people have never seen it. Here is how to use it, and what it does not catch.

The built-in Duplicates album

1. Open Photos.
2. Go to Albums and scroll all the way down to Utilities.
3. Tap Duplicates.
4. Tap Merge next to a pair, or Select → Select All → Merge to do them all.

"Merge" keeps the highest-quality version, combines the metadata, and moves the rest to Recently Deleted. Remember to empty Recently Deleted afterwards or the space is not freed for 30 days.

What it will not find

Apple's finder only matches photos that are exact or near-exact copies. In our testing it misses most of what fills a real library:

• Burst and "similar" shots – the eight nearly identical photos of the same sunset. Different pixels, same picture.
• Screenshots – there is a Screenshots album, but no way to sort by size or see how much they cost you in total.
• Blurry photos – no detection at all.
• Large videos – no sort-by-size view.
• Old photos – no "not looked at in a year" view.

Also, the Duplicates album only appears once iOS has finished indexing, which needs the phone locked and charging for a while. If the album is missing, leave the phone plugged in overnight.

The manual method for large videos

Open Photos → Albums → Media Types → Videos. There is no size sort, but the longest videos are usually the biggest. Tap one, swipe up, and the file size is shown under the info panel.

When you need an app

If your library has thousands of photos, the missing pieces above are where most of the space is. A good cleaner app should let you set how strict "similar" means, show you every match before deleting, and never show a number it has not measured.
