How to free space from WhatsApp on iPhone

Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage. On many phones WhatsApp is in the top three, sometimes at 10 to 20 GB. Almost all of it is forwarded photos and videos, not text. Here is how to get it back, from the safest step to the biggest.

1. Use WhatsApp's own storage tool

WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and Data → Manage Storage. It shows "Forwarded many times" and "Larger than 5 MB" at the top. These are the best first targets: forwarded media is almost never something you took yourself. Tap a group, select all, delete.

2. Stop auto-saving to Photos

By default, WhatsApp copies every photo and video you receive into your Photos library. So each file exists twice: once in WhatsApp, once in Photos. Turn it off: WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Save to Camera Roll → off. Also check Settings → Storage and Data → Media Auto-Download, and set Videos to "Never" on mobile data.

3. Clean the copies already in Photos

Step 2 stops new copies. The old ones are still in your Photos library, and they are the duplicates that a photo cleaner is good at finding: the same meme saved from three different group chats, the same video forwarded twice. Look in Photos → Albums → WhatsApp for the album the app created, and delete what you do not need. Then empty Recently Deleted.

4. Clear a whole chat's media

For a group chat that is pure noise: open the chat → tap the group name → Media, Links and Docs → Select → choose everything → Delete. The messages stay; only the attachments go.

What not to do

• Do not "Clear All Chats" unless you have a backup you have tested. It cannot be undone.
• Do not delete and reinstall WhatsApp hoping to shrink it. Media comes back from the backup, and you lose anything not backed up.
• Do not trust a cleaner app that says it cleared WhatsApp's cache. No app can touch WhatsApp's own storage on iOS. An app can only see WhatsApp media that was saved to Photos.

Expected result

Step 1 alone usually frees a few GB. Step 3 finds the duplicates in Photos. Together they are the biggest single storage win most people can get in ten minutes.
