What "Optimize iPhone Storage" really does
This one setting can free more space than any cleaner app. It is also the most misunderstood one. Here is what it does, in plain words.
Where it is
Settings → your name → iCloud → Photos. Turn on Sync this iPhone, then choose between:
- Optimize iPhone Storage – full-size originals live in iCloud; the phone keeps small versions and downloads the original only when you open a photo.
- Download and Keep Originals – every full-size photo stays on the phone as well.
What happens when you turn it on
Nothing is deleted. iOS uploads originals to iCloud first, and only once each upload is confirmed does it replace the local copy with a small version. This happens slowly, in the background, and mostly when the phone is charging and on Wi-Fi. Freeing 20 GB can take a day or two. That delay is why people think it "does not work".
What it costs
Your whole library must fit in your iCloud plan. The free 5 GB is not enough for almost anyone. The 50 GB and 200 GB plans are the usual choice. If iCloud is full, uploads stop and no space is freed on the phone.
What it does not do
- It does not remove duplicates. Ten copies of the same photo become ten small copies, and still ten full copies in iCloud that you pay for.
- It does not touch videos in WhatsApp, Messages or other apps.
- It does not free space instantly. Opening a photo downloads the original again.
Why no app can turn it on for you
This setting is inside iCloud, and Apple gives no app any way to read or change it. A cleaner app that shows an "Enable iCloud optimisation" button can only do one of two things: open the Settings app for you, or pretend. If the app is honest, it says which one. Best order of operations
- Delete duplicates and junk first, so you do not pay iCloud to store them.
- Then turn on Optimize iPhone Storage.
- Leave the phone charging on Wi-Fi overnight.
