Why does my iPhone say "Storage Almost Full" when I deleted photos?

You deleted hundreds of photos. The warning is still there. This is the most common storage question we get, and there are four usual causes. Check them in order.

1. The photos are in "Recently Deleted"

iOS keeps deleted photos for 30 days so you can recover them. During those 30 days they still take up space. To free it now: open Photos → Albums → scroll to the bottom → Recently Deleted → Select → Delete All.

2. iCloud Photos is doing the opposite of what you think

If iCloud Photos is on, deleting a photo on your iPhone deletes it everywhere, but the space you get back depends on the "Optimize iPhone Storage" setting. When that option is on, iOS already keeps only small versions on the phone, so deleting a few photos frees very little. Go to Settings → your name → iCloud → Photos and check which option is selected. We wrote a separate post on what "Optimize iPhone Storage" really does.

3. The space is not in Photos at all

Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage and wait for the bar to load. Look at the top items. On most phones the biggest consumers are:

• WhatsApp – forwarded photos and videos, often 5 to 20 GB. See how to free space from WhatsApp.
• Messages – old photo and video attachments. Settings → Messages → Keep Messages → 1 Year.
• Podcasts, Music, TV – downloaded episodes you already finished.
• Safari – offline reading list and cache. Settings → Safari → Clear History and Website Data.
• "System Data" – caches and logs. Usually the only real fix is a restart, or a backup and restore if it is huge.

4. The storage bar has not refreshed

The iPhone Storage screen calculates in the background and can be minutes behind. Leave the screen, wait, and come back. A restart also forces a recount.

What no app can fix

No third-party app can clear another app's cache or shrink "System Data". If a cleaner app claims it can, it is showing you an estimate, not a result. The honest route is Settings → General → iPhone Storage, one app at a time.

What an app can fix

An app can help with the Photos part: finding the duplicate burst shots, the 300 screenshots, and the ten 2 GB videos you forgot about. Those are usually the fastest real gain.
